Georgia has so many treasures. It is hard to pick out only a few. But this writer will be picking her favorites and links to several more.
Former Persident Jimmy Carter
This man is without a doubt a state treasure. Having just celebrated his 75th birthday he shows no signs of quitting. He has done so much for the state of Georgia. Not only was he a great president but he is a great humanitarian and is loved by everyone he comes in contact with. He is the founder of Habitat for Humanity, built the Carter Center which is associated with Emory University and includes the Jimmy Carter Library and Museum. He fights constantly for world hunger and peace and received numerous accolades for his work in this area.
Margaret Mitchell
Of course, everyone has heard of Margaret Mitchell, the essentric writer of Gone With The Wind. She is honored in Atlanta as the home where she lived and wrote the phenomenal best seller is open to the public.
Expert tour guides take you back to when Margaret wrote the book and how she lived in a tiny apartment in the back of this house. Visit the site for the Margaret Mitchell House & Museum
Stone Mountain
Of course the main attraction at Stone Mountain is the carvings on the front of the mammoth stone mountain. The memorial carving took over 50 years to complete and was the work of three sculptors. Gutzon Borglum, sculptor of Mount Rushmore, began the carving and two other sculptors completed the project in 1972. This gigantic carving depicts the Confederate heroes Robert E. Lee, Jefferson Davis, and Stonewall Jackson. The carving measures 90 by 190 feet.
